National Intrepid Center of Excellence

Greenhut Construction was selected as the Construction Manager of a very complex project at Eglin AFB. The project was privately funded by the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund started by the Fisher family. Upon completion, the Intrepid Spirit Centers are gifted to the Department of Defense for their use in diagnosing and treating brain trauma for returning service members. The Center provides holistic medicine compromising of multispecialty care integration, patient/family-centered care, wellness interventions, and the construction of architectural “healing environments.” The National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE), is a new clinical research center for traumatic brain injury and posttraumatic stress disorder in the Military Health System. Architecture and clinical process are united in a “design/care continuum” for optimal healing. A groundbreaking institution, the NICoE foreshadows many trends in national healthcare for the 21st century.

The single story, 25,000 sf medical facility has state of the art technology for diagnosis and treatment, including clinical, physical therapy, support, and public facilities. The facility includes an Intake/Clinic area for psychiatric testing, chiropractic treatment, acupuncture, neuro psych testing rooms, and exam rooms; a Physical Therapy area with an open gym layout containing physical therapy equipment including adjustable mat tables, parallel bars, treadmills, alter-G gait trainer, and other therapy items; a Sleep Lab equipped with a sleep system and ambient therapy music, and a control room with a computer monitoring system; a Central Park area which is a unique and multi-purpose environment to support physical therapy and family activities, with features including a therapeutic labyrinth of trees, shrubs, and water elements. There is also a Family Room that provides a reprieve space for patients and family to spend time together and take a break from the clinical treatment regime.
